If you're searching for a delightful Vietnamese dining experience in Burnaby, look no further than PHO 99 (SFU), a hidden gem that's winning the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Tucked away at 8901 Cornerstone Mews, this cozy restaurant invites you into a world of vibrant flavors, and its warm atmosphere will make you feel right at home.

At PHO 99, the menu is a testament to authentic Vietnamese cuisine, showcasing an array of beloved staples. For those craving a comforting bowl of pho, the Smokey Rib Pho is a true standout, featuring tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs paired with Canadian AAA eye of round, delicate rice noodles, all swimming in a rich, flavorful house beef broth that’s been simmered for an impressive 24 hours. Diners can't help but rave about the deep, satisfying flavors that transport them straight to the streets of Vietnam.

Not in the mood for pho? The restaurant also offers a delectable selection of “Cơm” (rice) dishes. Choose from options like the C1. Gà nướng sả, where smoky, fragrant lemongrass chicken thigh collides beautifully with hints of garlic and caramelized sweetness, or the C2. Gà sườn nướng, featuring a tantalizing marriage of charbroiled chicken and succulent pork chop that’s sure to satisfy your appetite. Each dish is served alongside premium ST25 Jasmine steamed rice, making it a fulfilling meal.

For a quick bite, don't miss out on the iconic “Bánh mì” (Vietnamese sub). The BM2. Gà nướng sả is a must-try, showcasing the same sumptuous lemongrass chicken that adorns the rice dishes, topped with garlic mayo and a medley of fresh veggies that make for the perfect handheld meal. Customers have remarked on how each bite bursts with flavor and freshness, making it a delightful choice for a quick yet satisfying lunch.

To round off your meal, indulge in one of PHO 99’s unique desserts. The Lychee Panna Cotta offers a delightful combination of creamy panna cotta and fragrant lychee, providing a refreshing end to your dining experience. Or go for the traditional “CHÈ" — sương sa hột lựu, a colorful rainbow dessert that’s as fun to eat as it is to look at, topped with coconut milk for that extra touch of sweetness.

While the food receives high praise, the atmosphere enhances your experience further, thanks to friendly service that makes every guest feel valued. Customers like Sarah S appreciate the staff's efficiency during busy lunch rushes, while others like Anton Borines highlight the plentiful portions that leave diners feeling stuffed and satisfied without breaking the bank.

However, like any establishment, there are areas for improvement. Some reviews mention that the ambiance could benefit from a refresh, and this feedback serves as a reminder that while the culinary offerings shine, a little sprucing up wouldn’t hurt.

Went for a visit to Burnaby Mountain and thought I make a trip back to my old stomping grounds. Lived near the SFU campus in 2018 for 1 year and I loved it. Oh my, how things have changed! So many new builds as well as new establishments. Back then there was no Vietnamese restaurants so I was stoked to see Pho 99. Vancouverites know that this is an OG franchise scattered throughout the city. Remember Pho Hoa? Apparently they all bear the same name but are individually owned. First impressions was “Damn, what huge space” Saw a lot of seated patrons during an awkward time which was a good sign. Students will forever be eating at odd times. I ordered the marinated bbq beef and pork rice dish. The plate was a little small and narrow but I guess it makes the portions seemed bigger? Regardless the lemongrass marinade was perfect. It makes sense because it will be hard to pull a fast one over smart and intelligent eaters. Students don’t mess around with their budgets. Loved the side of soup as well. Great flavours and super authentic. Satisfied!

On wednesday I went here to order a little snack to-go but the “little” snack became too little. For a spring roll to be this small coming to about $5 each and I have to pay an extra $1.75 just for a side of fish sauce to dip it with. Maybe I was caught in a bad day but for this little portion for a price I could get with meal wasn’t it.

Pho 99 SFU is a really great little gem for Vietnamese food in Burnaby. One of my favourite dishes is the Smokey Rib Pho. It is a real showstopper when it comes to the table. It features these massive fall-off the bone tender ribs, Canadian AAA eye of round, rice noodles, and “Smokey” house beef broth. The beef broth is made with 24-hour simmered bone marrow broth. You can really taste the difference. The soup is clearer with a really deep umami flavour. The Original “Hue” Spicy Lemongrass is another favourite and it features a 20-hour simmered spicy lemongrass broth with brisket, sliced pork roll, pork balls and thick vermicelli. Because Pho 99 doesn’t use any artificial or jar pastes the flavour isn’t nearly as punchy as other spots, but you can really taste the depth of flavour from the long simmer time and the fragrance of the lemongrass. The thick vermicelli was nice and slippery! Overall you can really taste the love and care that goes into the dishes. The service is always friendly and teas/waters are frequently refilled.

Pho 99 at SFU is a reliable choice for a satisfying meal. The friendly waitresses provide efficient service even during the busy weekday lunch rush. The food is tasty, with flavorful pho and a recently updated menu offering fresh options. Prices are a bit higher than past.

Quaint little place in the heart of SFU. The portions are massive and the taste is excellent. Been to Hanoi a couple of times and I can say they nailed the authenticity when it comes to satisfying my palate. My family of 5 came out stuffed and happy from a hearty meal with only a $50+ bill.

The food was decent, but this place really needs a renovation. When you're inside, it feels like everything is dirty. The men's restroom is particularly unpleasant, with a sticky floor, a toilet brush sitting on the urinal right in front of you, and filthy walls.
